S60 3rd Edition adds a host of fresh features while retaining those from the 2nd Edition. In addition, the 3rd Edition introduces a new level of flexibility and security into the platform, enabling manufacturers to create devices aimed at mass markets. The S60 platform therefore provides an open, secure, and scalable business opportunity to mobile operators and third-party developers.

S60 3rd Edition feature pack 1 introduces new features such as Firmware upgrade Over The Air (FOTA) and a new open-source browser. FOTA enables software upgrades to be performed over the air, initiated by either the user or operator. In addition to these, feature pack 1 also provides improvements in performance.

S60 3rd Edition feature pack 2 makes development of applications and services for S60 devices faster and more cost-efficient by extending native Symbian development environment with Open C. It brings the familiar standard C function libraries to the S60 platform resulting in increased productivity and improved time-to-market of applications. S60 multimedia capabilities are powered by HSDPA support, High Speed USB and support for Hardware accelerators.

S60 3rd Edition enables licensees to build more robust and versatile enterprise grade devices. Enterprises will benefit from the wealth of built-in, improved business features, such as calendar, data synchronization, and email. New security features offer more protection for business-critical data.

The new edition also supports the growing trend in mobile multimedia. Support for OMA DRM 2.0 for music improves usability and security of protected content.
