S60 Instant Messaging

Chat wherever you are

S60 instant messaging (IM) allows you to mobilize IM conversations in order to chat wherever and whenever you want. The S60 IM application supports:

  • chatting privately with friends, family, and colleagues
  • conversations in chat groups
  • presence-aware messaging in the form of friend lists

The application has been extensively tested to ensure good usability. Users can personalize their messages with emoticons and pictures and they can also publish presence information. S60 IM makes it easy and fun to share your feelings with your friends.

The S60 instant messaging application also allows many most popular internet services to be branded. Branding elements can be associated with specific server settings and connection occurs through an operator gateway server. The UI can then be customized according to service. Branded icons and terminology create an environment which reflects the internet client’s image. S60 customers can define supported IM brands.

Advanced connection handling ensures that applications which are always on can run simultaneously on the same device. If the network infrastructure limits the number of simultaneous connections, advanced connection handling makes sure that the IM session is maintained in situations where multimedia messages are sent or push email used. The technical features application supports the following:

  • S60 IM client can connect to any OMA IMPS v1.1 or v1.2.1 (Wireless Village) compliant server or gateway.
  • HTTP is used as a bearer protocol.
  • OMA IMPS Connection Initiation Requests are supported using WAP Push over SMS and UDP/IP.
  • Standalone requests are supported using UDP/IP and TCP/IP.

The S60 Instant Messaging application brings the IM experience into the mobile environment, providing new business opportunities and ways to communicate. An internet-proven service has become mobile – chat whenever you want.
